BANGALORE: Several thousand professionals at offices in and around Electronic City and Hosur Road will come under a safety net of a fire station being set up exclusively for the technology hub. Keeping in view the stepped-up security following terrorist alerts and long-pending requests from the 50-plus IT and non-IT firms for a fire station in the industrial area, the station is being set up by the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services.
Besides the 500-acre Electronic City, it will cover Bommasandra and Veerasandra industrial estates and campuses on Hosur Road which house companies like Wipro, Infosys, Siemens, Biocon and Satyam. The new fire station will be equipped with two fire tenders, a rescue van, an ambulance and adequate personnel. The response time to emergencies will be reduced to a few minutes.
Currently, the closest fire stations are located on Bannerghatta Road (Jayanagar station) and Banashankari (near Deve Gowda petrol bunk). The travel time is nearly an hour, depending on traffic on Hosur Road and Bannerghatta Road. According to Suneel Kumar of the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services, with the new station, help will reach the affected areas quickly, reducing loss to life and property. It will be the 12th in the city, Kumar said. "Though there has been no major fire mishap in the area in the recent past, we will be prepared to handle any eventuality.
Most buildings here have a fire-safety and fire-fighting system in place," he said. The station will be set up through a public-private participation along with Electronic City Industries Association (ELCIA), which has already donated Rs 18 lakh. Keonics has allotted a 1.5 acre plot for the fire station. A team of senior officers along with ELCIA officials visited the site on Wednesday and are awaiting a final building plan being worked out by a private developer. ELCIA Director Col (retd) Mohan Chandran said: "The fire station will not only cover the 100-odd companies in Electronic City, but scores of other places on Hosur Road."
